Your Daily Atonement

How the atonement of Jesus Christ can make a difference in our lives — not just once, but every day.

Understanding Sin

What is sin? The Apostle James gives us a clear definition:

James 4:17

“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

Sin is choosing not to do what God wants. These are not always dramatic transgressions — our daily sins are often small and familiar: yelling at family members, lying to escape consequences, teasing a sibling, neglecting scripture study or prayer. Yet each carries weight.

Every transgression carries two components:

Two Dimensions of Sin

  • Consequences — direct results affecting oneself and others: damaged relationships, escalating dishonesty, lost trust
  • Penalties — spiritual: the withdrawal of divine influence, and the self-justification that follows as we try to silence our conscience

Steps of Repentance

The path forward involves six stages:

The Six Steps

  • 1. Recognize — See the wrongdoing clearly, without rationalization
  • 2. Godly Sorrow — Feel sincere remorse — not merely regret for consequences, but sorrow for having offended God and harmed others
  • 3. Forsake — Abandon the behavior through genuine effort, not willpower alone but reliance on Christ
  • 4. Confess — Confess to those harmed; and for serious sins, to the Lord’s authorized servants
  • 5. Restitution — Make it right through truthfulness, apology, and restoration where possible
  • 6. Forgive — Forgive others and oneself; releasing resentment is part of the healing process

The Daily Impact

When we apply the atonement daily, the benefits are real and measurable:

Benefits of Daily Repentance

  • Strengthened divine influence in our daily lives
  • Improved family and friend relationships
  • Greater happiness through alignment with heaven

The atonement is not a one-time transaction. It is the daily bread of discipleship. Christ did not suffer and atone only for our great and dramatic sins — He atoned for every moment of unkindness, every failure of integrity, every missed opportunity for good. Each day we can come to Him, acknowledge where we have fallen short, and receive the healing that His grace makes possible. This is your daily atonement — and it changes everything.
