A Pattern for How to Receive Revelation
Prepare, Ponder, Pray, Record, React, Repent, Repeat
Prepare
Prepare for revelation—expect it. Put yourself in a state where revelation can be received. Remember: preparation proceeds power.
Instead of relying solely on human logic or reasoning, we are taught to rely upon the arm of the Spirit, through which we can understand the proper intent and interpretation of scripture.
“And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things…”
Ponder
Study and ponder it out in your mind. God does not give us answers for things we can already understand through our own abilities. Think about the question, research it, and come to your own initial conclusion. Afterward, ask God if it is right (Moroni 10:3–5).
Pray
Come to a conclusion in your mind, then pray. Pray with the understanding and conviction that an answer will come. Remain open to the possibility that you could be wrong. When the answer comes, you will be given intelligence, knowledge, and understanding beyond that which you previously had. This is the revelation—not merely a feeling, but knowledge.
Record
Document the answer. Write down the answer, your thoughts, feelings, and impressions so you don’t forget. Review personal revelations over time and act upon them if necessary.
React
Act upon the revelation. Revelation is meant to lead us to action. If you ignore God’s revelation given to you, you will have difficulty getting more.
Repent & Repeat
Repent when the Spirit is grieved—this clears the way for continued revelation. Repeat this pattern regularly. Revelation isn’t just a tool for crisis; it’s a spiritual gift meant to guide us every day.
“Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God… this is the spirit of revelation which is in me.”
