Are You a Child of God or a Mere Plaything?

You are not an accident. You are not a cosmic byproduct or an idle experiment. You are a child of God—literally.

Your divine identity is not symbolic or metaphorical. It is the foundation of your existence and your eternal potential.

Romans 8:16–17

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ…”

Eternal Identity

You are eternal. Not just your soul, but your intelligence—your core being—has no beginning.

D&C 93:29

“Man was also in the beginning with God. Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be.”

This is not just a statement about origin but about nature. You were not made from nothing. You have always existed. God did not create you in the way a sculptor molds clay from scratch. Rather, He organized a spirit body from spirit matter and then placed your intelligence into that form—one step in a grand eternal journey.

D&C 131:7

“All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure, and can only be discerned by purer eyes; we cannot see it…”

This organization into spirit bodies marked our entrance into the “first estate,” where we lived as spirit sons and daughters of God. There, we exercised agency, learned, chose, and prepared to come to earth.

Agency Before Mortality

Often overlooked is the full scope of agency in the premortal realm. Our ability to choose began long before mortality. The War in Heaven was not just a war of rebellion—it was a war of choice. You chose to follow the Father’s plan. That decision is part of your eternal record and character.

Abraham 3:26

“And they who keep their first estate shall be added upon…”

Unique Worth and Infinite Potential

Because you are an eternal intelligence—embodied in a spirit and now in mortal flesh—you carry infinite potential. There is no one else exactly like you. That isn’t just poetic. It’s doctrinal.

You are not meant to be a clone, nor a passive observer of eternity. You are meant to become like your Father and Mother. Not merely to live with Them—but to become as They are.

D&C 132:20

“Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting…”

Empowered by God

When you understand who you are—an eternal being with divine potential—obedience and faith cease to be burdens. They become the means by which your potential is unlocked.

Philippians 4:13

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

God doesn’t demand perfection now. He asks for belief, repentance, and willingness to follow. He empowers the humble. He lifts the sincere.
