Satan (Lucifer) from an LDS Perspective
Origins, Influence, and Overcoming the Adversary
Satan—often called Lucifer, meaning “light-bearer” or “shining one”—is depicted in various religious traditions as the ultimate adversary to God’s plan for His children. In the gospel of Jesus Christ, additional scriptural sources clarify his premortal rebellion, his nature, and his ongoing effort to thwart humanity’s quest for salvation.
Although Satan retains his premortal knowledge and does not experience a veil of forgetfulness, his power pales in comparison to that of God—and even to that of embodied beings. As mortals with physical bodies, we inherently hold greater power than Satan and his followers. This is why he constantly seeks to deceive and manipulate; he cannot force or compel anyone to act against their will unless they yield to his influence. Understanding this reality provides hope and confidence in our ability to resist the adversary through faith, righteous living, and reliance on Christ.
1. Lucifer’s Origin and Premortal Rebellion
Biblical and Early Interpretations
- Luke 10:18: Christ declares, “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.”
- Revelation 12:7–9: John’s vision describes a “war in heaven” where the dragon (the devil) and his angels were cast out.
- John 8:44: Jesus calls Satan “a murderer from the beginning.”
In Hebrew texts, ha-Satan (“the accuser” or “the adversary”) appears in contexts like Job 1–2 and Zechariah 3:1–2, often testing and accusing under God’s allowance.
The War in Heaven
Moses 4:1–4 reveals that Lucifer, a spirit son of God, rebelled against God’s plan by proposing to “save” all mankind at the cost of their moral agency, seeking to usurp God’s glory. D&C 29:36 teaches that “a third part of the hosts of heaven” chose Lucifer’s modifications to God’s plan and were cast out, forfeiting the opportunity for embodiment and progression.
His Nature and Characteristics
- Vessel of Wrath: Anger and hatred are his principal drives; he is a liar and a murderer from the beginning (2 Nephi 9:9; D&C 76:32–33).
- Jealous and Vengeful: He seeks the destruction of every human soul (1 Peter 5:8).
- A Liar from the Beginning: Deception, lies, fear, and half-truths are his primary tools (John 8:44; Moses 4:4).
- Ever Vigilant: Satan does not rest; he constantly seeks to destroy mankind physically and spiritually (Revelation 12:12).

2. How Satan Influences Mankind
Satan tempts Jesus in the wilderness by twisting scripture and appealing to physical need and pride (Matthew 4:1–11). Known as the “father of lies” (John 8:44), Satan sows confusion by mixing truth with falsehood. He uses fear to paralyze individuals—fear being a negative prediction of the future, directly opposing faith (2 Timothy 1:7; D&C 6:36).
3. Overcoming the Adversary Through Christ
Through Christ’s Atonement, believers can repent and overcome the adversary (Alma 7:11–13). Nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ if we choose faith (Romans 8:38–39). By choosing Christ, we thwart Satan’s efforts to enslave us (2 Nephi 2:27).
