The Lord Prepares a Way
Based on 1 Nephi 3:7 — how Nephi’s three attempts to retrieve the brass plates teach us to persist in callings and commandments, trusting that God will prepare the way.
1 Nephi 3:7
“And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.”
Difficult Commandments
Many of God’s commandments seem impossible when first received. Abraham was commanded to offer his own son (Genesis 22:2–3) — the most unimaginable trial imaginable. Yet he moved forward in faith. Similarly, many of us face callings and stewardships that seem far beyond our abilities. This is by design. God calls us not because we are already capable, but because He intends to make us capable.
Nephi’s Three Attempts
First Attempt: Direct Negotiation (1 Nephi 3:10–14)
The brothers cast lots. Laman attempted direct negotiation with Laban but was rejected and threatened. Plan failed. A lesser man would have gone home. Nephi would not.
Second Attempt: Offer Riches (1 Nephi 3:16–27)
They offered gold and treasures. Laban’s greed led him to send servants to kill them. They fled to the wilderness. Another failure. Still Nephi persisted.
Third Attempt: Faith Without a Plan (1 Nephi 4:5–7)
Without a concrete plan, Nephi moved forward in faith, guided by the Spirit in each moment. He discovered Laban intoxicated, was directed by the Spirit, and was able to obtain the records. The Lord had prepared a way — but it required Nephi to show up first.
Key Lessons
What Nephi’s Story Teaches
- Persist despite failure. Nephi did not abandon the mission after two failures; he maintained faith and continued forward.
- Faith without complete understanding. Sometimes we must “show up” without knowing the full plan, trusting God will provide direction in the moment.
- Divine guidance in coincidence. What appears as chance often represents God’s subtle direction through the Holy Ghost.
- Avoid spiritual impediments. Inappropriate media, pornography, and harmful substances impair one’s ability to recognize divine guidance.
- Grace sufficient for all callings. Whether serving as parent, teacher, bishop, or missionary, God provides the means to fulfill assigned stewardships.

“I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”
Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
God does not prepare the way before we act — He prepares it as we move forward in faith. The way appears when we show up. This is the Nephi principle, and it applies to every calling and commandment we will ever receive.
