The Framework of Revelation
Based on Elder Dale G. Renlund’s October 2022 general conference address — how personal revelation operates, and a practical process for seeking and receiving it.
Four Components of Revelation
Elder Renlund’s October 2022 address identifies four key components that define how personal revelation operates:
1. Scripture as Foundation
“Feasting on the words of Christ, as found in the scriptures, stimulates personal revelation.” Scripture immersion is not just preparation for revelation — it is a channel through which revelation flows. When we bring the words of the scriptures into our minds and hearts, we give the Spirit vocabulary and context to communicate with us.
2. Stewardship Boundaries
Revelation operates within one’s designated sphere. Personal revelation is for the individual. Family revelation is for those who preside in the home. Church revelation is for those called with the keys to lead. We do not receive revelation for others’ stewardships, and others do not receive revelation for ours. Staying within this principle protects us from deception.
3. Harmony with Commandments
Personal revelation aligns with God’s established commandments and covenants already revealed. True revelation never contradicts established gospel principles. If a claimed revelation conflicts with scripture, with the teachings of living prophets, or with the commandments we have already received, it is not from God. This is a safeguard, not a limitation.
4. Recognition of Previous Answers
Avoiding redundant prayers about matters already clearly answered by God. When God has already provided an answer, continuing to pray for a different response reflects a lack of faith in what He has already revealed. We honor God’s answers by acting on them.
A Process for Seeking Revelation: PPPRRRR
Personal revelation is not passive. It comes to those who actively seek it through an iterative cycle:
The PPPRRRR Framework
- Prepare — approach God with expectation, faith, and a willing heart
- Ponder — use study, reasoning, and careful thought about your question
- Pray — ask with faith and genuine openness to any answer
- Record — document the answers and impressions you receive
- React — act on what you have received; faith without works is dead
- Repent — where obedience has fallen short, correct course
- Repeat — return to the cycle; revelation is a continuing process, not a one-time event
Faith-Based Evidence vs. Scientific Evidence
Science assumes claims are false until proven with 95–99% confidence. Religious conviction develops through a different mechanism: spiritual evidence comes after exercising faith, not before. As Moroni promises, the manifestation of the truth of the Book of Mormon comes to those who ask “with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ” (Moroni 10:4). The trial of faith precedes the witness.
This does not make spiritual knowledge inferior — it makes it personal. Scientific evidence can be shared with anyone; spiritual evidence is given to the one who personally seeks and exercises faith. God invites each of us to come and know for ourselves, through the process He has established, that these things are true.
