Nephi the Disciple
Son of Nephi son of Helaman — the first to bow at the feet of the risen Christ in the Americas, and keeper of the sacred record
Shepherd of the Church Before the Signs
Nephi inherited leadership of the Nephite church from his father, Nephi son of Helaman, who had departed from the land in the year of the Savior’s birth. The younger Nephi came to his ministry in a period of intense spiritual conflict: unbelievers had set a day when all who believed in the coming signs of Christ’s birth would be put to death if the signs did not appear.
Nephi went out and cried mightily to God all that day on behalf of his people. That night, at the going down of the sun, the sign came: no darkness fell. The sun set and the night remained as bright as day. Stars appeared but the darkness never came. A new star rose. Those who had doubted fell to the earth in astonishment. The believers wept for joy. Nephi had led his people through the night that had no darkness, praying while the sign they had staked their lives on appeared.
Through the Darkness
Thirty-three years later, the signs of the Savior’s death came as Samuel the Lamanite had prophesied — with a violence and darkness unlike anything the Nephite world had seen. A terrible storm arose. Lightning struck. The whole face of the land was changed. Cities sank into the sea. Others were burned or buried or carried away. For three hours the destruction continued, and then came three days of total darkness, so thick that no light could be kindled.
When the darkness lifted and the voice of Christ had spoken from heaven to the survivors, Nephi went forward. The record says that “Nephi went forth, and bowed himself before the Lord and did kiss his feet” (3 Nephi 11:19). He had lived through the night of no darkness at Christ’s birth and the three days of darkness at his death. He had shepherded his people across those thirty-three years. When Christ appeared, Nephi was at his feet.
Power to Baptize
Jesus called to Nephi and charged him directly:
3 Nephi 11:21–22
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, blessed art thou for thy faith. And now behold, I give unto you power that ye shall baptize this people when I am again ascended into heaven. And again the Lord called others, and said unto them likewise; and he gave unto them power to baptize.”
Nephi was the first of the twelve disciples chosen by Christ in the Americas. He received power to baptize before any of the others, heard himself called blessed for his faith by the risen Lord, and then witnessed the most extensive record of Christ’s direct teaching that exists in any scripture — three days of ministry to the Nephites, encompassing the Sermon on the Mount repeated and expanded, the sacrament instituted, prophecy delivered, and the twelve commissioned.
The Record Keeper
After Christ ascended, Nephi baptized the twelve disciples and many of the people. The Holy Ghost fell upon them. Angels came and ministered. Fire encircled the children. Nephi and his fellow disciples continued to minister and teach, and the twenty years that followed Christ’s appearance were a period of peace and righteousness without precedent in Nephite history. Mormon notes: “Nephi did minister with power and with great authority” (3 Nephi 7:17).
Nephi also kept the records, which he delivered in time to his son. The most sacred chapters of the Book of Mormon — the account of the Savior’s appearance and ministry in the Americas — were preserved by this man who had prayed through the night of no darkness, walked through three days of destruction, and then bowed at the feet of the one he had spent his whole life serving.
